On the road to Athens*

*only for Greeks

The Islamic art in the 21st century :The third biggest Mosque

mosque1
Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi is the third biggest mosque in the world after Islam’s two holiest sites in Saudi Arabia — Mecca’s Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medin.

the mosque was built on a 9.5-metre (31-feet) high hill so it is visible from far, it covers an area of 22,000 square metres (237,000 square feet), and it can accommodate more than 40,000 faithful,

Thousands of workers,” nearly all from the Asian subcontinent, were involved in building the mosque. The sculptors were Moroccan.

Two rooms next to the main prayer hall, with a 1,500-capacity each, have been reserved for women, who can follow sermons delivered by prayer leaders on giant television screens. Islam requires men and women to pray separately.

The main dome is also “the biggest” mosque dome in the world and it is 75 metres (246 feet) high with a 32.2-metre (105.6 feet) diametre.

The centrepiece is a 6,000 square metre (64,583 square feet) hand-made Persian carpet, said to be the biggest in the world.

“More than 1,200 women from the Khorasan region in eastern Iran spent two years weaving the carpet, which weighs 45 tonnes and cost more than 8.5 million dollars.

The carpet covers the floor of the main prayer hall, which can accommodate up to 9,000 faithful.

polieleosAnother breathtaking piece is a huge crystal chandelier in the main prayer hall, one of seven German-made chandeliers costing more than eight million dollars. It is 10-metre (32.8 feet) tall, 10-metre wide and weighs nine tonnes.

How our children see us

mom5It is a truth universally acknowledged that the written word is more powerful than the spoken one. I confirmed it when I read my little albion’s poem for the mother’s day.

A woman that is Greek
A beautiful woman with green eyes
Who is this woman?
My mother that is wh
o!’

I feel that I am in a better position than that of Martin Amis whose children said to him :”You’d look a lot better, daddy, if you grew more hair’-or ” Daddy, when you laugh you look like a mad old tramp”. He continued by saying:
“At this time of life you resign yourself to simple truths. Each successive visit to the mirror will be by definition confront you with something unprecedentedly awful. When you become old you find yourself auditioning for the role of a lifetime, then after interminable rehearsals you find you are starring in a horror film, talentless, irresponsible and…. low budget. Above all else, as is the way for horror films, they are saving the worst for last!”

I think stoicism is the only way to confront the situation of ageing and our children’s criticism. So far I escaped unscathed 😕

Happy ending stories

isbac I’ m sure Dewey and the Library of Congress would be envious of my little Albion’s classification system, as well as all the Marketing Managers of the big bookshops. One day, she decided to classify her books in her own little bookcase  according to her own way of understanding and mood.  And there you are, her new classification system:

1. Scary stories

2. Bedtime stories

3. Happy Ending stories

Specifically, during these recessionary times the last one, “Happy ending stories” will be an attractive subject heading for the customers of all the big bookshops.

My little Albion made clear the point: If you want something new and refreshing in order to get out of the tunnel, look and listen carefully your children 😉
